I used this tutorial loosesly. The main reason for posting this is the one major change I made. Having arm/wrist issues myself, I made one the general size and shape of a keyboard wrist rest for my carpal tunnel inflicted father. I personally get a lot of relief from heat and often rest my hands on a heat bag while working/typing. If you know someone with hand/wrist issues that benefit from heat or cold try making one for them to use when they are on the computer!

If you want something scientifically amazing that won't stain, try zubbles. But if you mistakenly bought some Crayola bubbles believing that they were truly "washable" like I did, don't toss em out, let the kids paint with them first!

Cake by DH, what can I say, the man can do anything!

Cake pops are my contribution. Bakerella makes it look so easy I didn't make them until an hour or so before the party, much harder than I anticipated! Then the food markers I bought wouldn't write on the candy melts so I used the only frosting in the house to make the eyes. I've read a bit more on Bakerella and apparently I should have thinned the wiltons candy melts with some veg. shortening, that would have made them much smoother. Also, there seems to be only one kind of food marker that will write on candy melts and they don't sell it at my Michaels. Good to know, I'm going to try the cake pop thing again, just not anytime soon, lol.

I scoured the web to find out how to make curtains and went with this tutorial: http://annasnest.com/article/how-to-make-lined-curtains I didn't actually measure anything, just eyeballed it and it worked out all right. We will be moving from here eventually, I can almost guarantee that the next house will not have any windows that these curtains will fit (Murphy's Law). This was good practice and Joe of course loves them. Rockets in his favorite color!!! What's not to like? =)

I didn't have any buttons so I made one from shrinkydinks, two actually but the first was a major fail. I'm not thrilled with the second one but it'll work. I love the fabric, the backside is blue of the same print from connecting threads.

This started out as a hand embroidered flower pin cushion... it was a nightmare... threads breaking, fabric shredding... sighhhhhh. So I thought I'd try putting some buds from a flowered ribbon on it... then more and more until the original pin cushion was hidden from view. I love it. I am glad DH talked me into throwing my first attempt at a pincushion for this swap away as it was just not right (I had to delete the post... really... not right) so when this started going sideways I got really frustrated... in the end I think it worked out perfectly!

Shrinky Dinks, stamped with a design, colored, shrunk and baked again as a sandwich with a pin in the middle. This was EXTREMELY difficult to get even close to right. If I find a good tut or manage to discover a good way I'll post it because they are IMO really fun.

Jan doll quilt

So, the theme chosen for this months dqs was "where you are from". Right now, I am living in Nebraska. The flags represent different things from the area:

It is windy almost every day, hence the kite.

There are home made bee products all over the place here, so the bees.

The state bird and flower are on the last flag.

Nebraska is home of the arbor day foundation, so I put a little tree flag on it.

And, we spend a lot of time at the Omaha zoo, so what could be better than some teeny tiny zoo fabric!

The center of the sun is made from corn fabric and there are wheat and grass fields at the bottom.

I hope the recipient likes it. It was quite a few days of discussing placements and sewing, then resewing to try and get it to look right.

I'm still unable to fmq on my machines, so I did a simple line of quilting around the sun and puposefully left the "sky" loose and poofy to give more of a cloudy sky effect. I wish I had put an extra layer of batting behind the top, now I'm worried it is just going to look wrinkled when it gets to the recipient.

I sent the hostess of the doll quilt swap on the quilt board I attend some selvages to say thank you for taking the time to organize and run everything so smoothly. And look what she sent me as a thank you for my thank you:

I got two large sheets of felt from Michael's for about $1.99 each and now I have a much brighter little sewing corner. You can see my hexagon in progress, I am determined to make at least one twin sized hand sewn quilt just so that I can say I did. Seeing as it is only 5 by 7 rows of hexes so far, it could take a while. The squares are awaiting the arrival of a die for the Accuquilt Go Baby DH bought me for Christmas!!! Once that arrives I can start working on my own eye spy. Lot's of Dresden blades that don't quite work yet, and my lovely rocketeer barely visible in the bottom corner. I have two beautiful hand sewn Sun Bonnet Sue blocks hanging up out of view just to the right that I got from a wonderful swap partner as an extra! I was a little worried about how the living room would like with so much "stuff" on the wall, but I love it and the kids do too.

Dog Bed

Just a simple dog bed with some fabric from Goodwill, but Daisy seems to like it. I've had the fabric for years now, just waiting for a perfect project. I had really hoped to use it to make something for the boys, the fabric has great pictures and explanations of parts of the tree, types of trees etc. But inspiration never struck and so (since we had to toss the old bed) dog bed it is.

I got the template in the mail yesterday and spent about an hour and a half making this. I love it. I would really like to make a quilt of all the fabrics in the Holiday Happy line, it would be a perfect Christmas quilt, I hope that there is still some in stock when I can afford to make a purchase that big. I used this tutorial , it is wonderful!

Joe loves the holiday happy gnome fabric and insisted that it be the back of his. Ethan likewise requested the same green I used to bind his quilt. Nothing spectacular but it'll work for now since their old ones are falling apart.

I made this a while ago but Joe wanted to wear it today so I took out the camera. I cut the bottom to look more like batman than the typical cape. I couldn't figure out a good way to hem it with all those curves so I just did a decorative stitch on the edges and trimmed it down close. Good enough for a four year old is good enough for me, he just informed me that his friend "batman" gave it to him.

Boymade Christmas cards

My boys like anything with wheels. This year I bought some blank cards and lay them out flat over several sheets of freezer paper. Then I dumped some paint out and let the boys drive various small trains, trucks, and cars all over the cards. I cut out some trees and Ethan glued them to the front. Not bad looking, all things considered, it would have been nice to get them done in time to mail out, however... = ) Maybe next year!

Applesauce and Cinnamon Ornaments

We made these last year too. There are several recipes on the net, I used 1 cup of applesauce mixed with 1 1/2 cups of cinnamon. Knead it until a good cookie dough like consistency. Roll out, let the kids get crazy with the cookie cutters. Air dry over several days, flipping over often. I give a bunch away at work, some of the people in offices leave them up all year because they smell so good.

I've had the panel forever and finally got it done for the boys to play with. I quilted along the lines of longitude and latitude. Now I can bring their foam puzzle map to Goodwill and they can still play conquering the world!

I made the binding out of scraps, but they seem to blend okay. I was really lazy and quilted some lines with white thread until it ran out, then I just lightly touched them with black permanent marker to make them blend in better = )

Advent Calendar 2010

Joe and I made the advent calendar while Ethan was at school. I found these printable numbers here via Missy's post here. We used an old muffin pan, Joe filled each muffin spot with 2 Hershey's kisses (one for each boy) and a sprinkling of assorted candy's we picked out while at the grocery store yesterday. Then he helped glue the cardstock numbers to the pan, and make sure it was extra secure by glitter gluing around each "door" (a little on the messy side, so we decided the entire bottom row needed to be "iced". Ethan is excited, he can't wait for the 12th!

Next year we hope to plan ahead a little bit better and make some Christmas themed mini lego sets, a DIY lego advent calendar of sorts.

This one I sent to a professional to quilt, way too bulky for me to attempt. Send me a message if you'd like to contact her, great prices, very good communication, love the quilting. I opted for loops and stars, and love how it looks fresh out of the dryer. Ethan likes it, so mission accomplished.

Ethan picked out the green polka dot fabric that I used for the binding and he chose the layout of all the blocks. I think he did pretty well!

Ethan has been asking me for a few days to make him something soft so that he can make Mr. Potato Head like the one in Toy Story 3 (Mr. Potato Head as a tortilla). Here is the first prototype, we'll see how it holds up. He loves it.

You can also see the patch I sewed over his glasses. The adhesive ones were just to uncomfortable for him, when he has to wear it so often now. So I sewed a patch over his spare glasses and he just switches them out when he comes home from school.

Lots of help from Joe, including the idea to sew two on top of each other and open it up to make a more realistic looking snowflake. Just chain sewn and stuck to the ceiling with tape. They want to do the whole house!

The boys and I made these today, lovely Christmas gnomes. Joe named them "Mr. Gnome, huggy, hugger, huggest, and Miss Gnome". Personally I wanted to name at least one Miss Gnomer, but Joe was set against it. They helped turn and pull the giant pile of stuffing into tiny fluffy pieces. (The quilt on the wall was the one given to me in the Oct swap by Faye)

I happened to have these blank ones at the house for my boys to play with, but I think a "real" set would be easy to adapt and look fantastic in any sewing room. You could make the larger ones for pins, medium sized ones to hold bobbins or other notions, smaller ones for needles!

We finally exchanged all our mismatched bits of plastic bins and boxes for two sets of Trofast from Ikea... Karl finished putting it all together today and I must say the room feels a lot more inviting. I'll make curtains this weekend and then we are all set! Four of the bins are empty so lots of room to grow.

I haven't just quit or run out of things to scroll, but I probably won't be posting anything here for quite a bit longer. My left arm has been in pain since about June and a recent MRI showed a torn muscle and swollen tendons. My right arm is in a great deal of pain as well, since it is compensating for limited use of the left. So, until I'm healed or they say use isn't going to do further harm I am on Scroll Saw hiatus.

Powdered milk paint

I found some powdered milk and made some milk paint using liquid watercolors for color. Mixed thicker than a 1 to 1 ratio of pwd milk and water, it leaves a glossy finish, otherwise slightly more opaque stain effect. I still have to figure out how waterproof it is, whether it can be chewed on without staining or running. I also purchased some Claphams wood block and salad bowl finish, that is still in experimentation too. My arms hurt this weekend or I'd have cut out some more fun things... maybe tonight!

I buy premade wood axles and wheels from http://www.caseyswood.com/

after that it is simple... pre=drill holes that the peg will just fit in, then dab in some glue with a toothpick or similar small piece of wood, make sure the wheel is facing out properly, insert the peg and stick both wheel and peg into the hole. With the capped pegs you need one peg for each side and if they are too long there will be a large space between the toy and the wheel... in that case you may want to trim the peg or just double up on wheels (which makes the toy more stable)... there are some other tips and tricks to be found, I'll ask tomorrow if it is ok to share with the person I learned them from.

I downloaded their pattern here http://www.freewoodpuzzles.com/alligator.html and just neglected to make puzzle cuts so they boys could play.

Painted with watercolors, still trying to get beeswax.

The bottom one with the wonky leg was made in a hurry when my oldest boy suddenly realized the youngest had an alligator and he didn't.

(I made one, Karl the other... one is lightly painted with watercolor... whichever you like the best is the one I made, of course!)

My weekend has been taken over by crafting things for my boys.
